LP in edition of 300
Hand Numbered
For the first time this century, two missed masterpieces are coming available on vinyl.
The band Souled American formed in Chicago in 1986 and recorded a total of sixty-six songs between 1988 and 1996. Though not ever popular themselves, their evolving hybrid of roots/rock music heavily influenced many more popular bands to come, among them Wilco, The Jayhawks, The Feelies, Califone, Counting Crows, The Mountain Goats, and Cracker.
Their records became legendary, unavailable for decades.
Some got to the Internet in 2023.
Their last two albums Frozen and Notes Campfire will now be re-issued in limited, hand-crafted, 30th Anniversary Editions with a fresh abundance of stories, technical information, musician credits, and cartoons that detail the unexpected origins surrounding these two early classics of “ambient Americana.” These records sound at once both old and new with brilliant melodies and profound performances stacked in unusual patterns like soft-hued bricks.

BILL MEYER: “...[by] album number five, Frozen, the Tuma solo connection starts to materialize. With its more drawn-out tempos drawing everything within gravitational reach towards a strange state, this is the first record to sound anything like solo Tuma, albeit fuller and more polished than anything he did on his own. Chris Grigoroff’s singing sounds less engaged than ever with country-rock convention, and more like this one weird guy from the country singing. He sounds more emotionally invested in these songs… this might be their record I like the most…”

RICHARD GEHR: “As deliciously dirge-like as their last two records got, it’s inaccurate to paint them as relentlessly slack. Faster grooves lurk with the languid tempo of ‘Rain Delay,’ while ‘Heyday’ (“Heard a lotta talk about their heyday/ It’s just the day that I yell hey“) and other Frozen tracks are regular foot tappers...”
